What’s all the buzz about?
Founder, Cherilyn Orr was interviewed by Waiting to Belong (an adoption initiative started by Focus on the Family Canada) about what The Stoplight Approach is and how our philosophy can help children understand and manage their emotions.
Based on Waiting to Belong’s interview, Focus on the Family Canada wrote an article explaining what The Stoplight Approach is and how it can be a helpful tool for parents and children.
Cherilyn Orr was also interviewed by The World (a radio program co-produced by BBC and WGBH) about refugee children’s mental health and wellbeing, specifically regarding refugee mothers’ lack of mental and emotional space to help soothe their children.

Offered in English, Spanish, French, and Arabic, this booklet provides an overview of the Stoplight philosophy, presenting it in an easy-to-understand and accessible way, so that it can be easily explained to anyone from 2 to 92! It boils down complex ideas from various larger Stoplight resources and shares the core behind the Stoplight Approach.
Connected people.
Humans are created for relationship and connection. Sadly, many people around the world grow up in environments with limited connection and emotionally, physically, or otherwise unhealthy relationships. More to the point, they feel disconnected. Without positive connection, we can’t thrive. And when we can’t thrive, we lose hope. The Stoplight Approach is committed to connecting children in their homes, schools, and communities, helping them become self-aware of their emotions, their behaviour and how it affects those around them, and provides tools to help them foster healthy relationships.
Caring communities.
Whether you live in the suburbs, the ghetto, the country, or the city, we all live in a community, and community is what shapes us. If that community is unhealthy, we become unhealthy. The Stoplight Approach is driven to increase emotional and mental health of communities (with a special interest in schools and homes). It helps to create proactive and responsive communities that builds empathetic and resilient children, and solve problems and create solutions that help the community to thrive.
A kinder world.
If people are what make up a community, then communities are what make and shape the world. If the people inside those communities are empathetic and resilient, and those communities are proactive and responsive, then we can make the world a safer place for everyone to live, learn, and thrive. Imagine a world where all children feel safe, loved, and connected. Imagine a world where you don’t feel you need to walk on eggshells every time you enter your workplace. Imagine a world where you don’t fear to fail, but where you fail to fear. That’s a world we think is worth fighting for. How about you?
